Why advocate?

Does it surprise you to hear that the majority of women who undergo mastectomy do NOT have reconstruction? It shocked me! I found this out shortly after Barbie and I started FLAT & fabulous. When we shared this information with our peers, I was even more surprised by the various emotions we were met with afterward.

There is an enormous disconnect between reality and perception. Over the years, I have often wondered who is this disconnect serving? In the lives of those without reconstruction, the disconnect perpetuates isolation. I consistently hear from our new members I thought I was the only one.

For this reason, one of the priorities of  FLAT & fabulous is to empower and educate. We want to educate those around us, our medical teams and ourselves. We want to empower women to find the courage and strength to make the choices best for their unique and individual journeys. And, ultimately, we want the voices of our sisters, who have been given a false perception of being all alone, to finally be heard.

Our sisters have shared their experiences, their voices, and now, their realities through photographs to achieve this goal. It is incredibly powerful and I hope you will find this information helpful in your journey.
